RECAP: Board talks historic district, downtown biz expo

The Riverhead Town Board discussed on Thursday morning a proposed East End Small Business Alliance Expo on the riverfront, an effort to create a historic corridor on Main Road and other items at its weekly work session.

The expo, proposed by Dave Lotito of One for the Road LLC, is scheduled for July 26 from noon to 10 p.m. and is billed as a “small business networking group,” where 12-15 small business owners can display their products and services.

The Town Board raised questions about the proposal last week, saying it coincided with the farmers market, and while Supervisor Sean Walter raised his eyebrows Thursday morning about the 10 p.m. closing time — as well as the fact the board would be OK’ing a private business to hold an event on the riverfront — the board seemed in agreement that it wouldn’t be a problem

The board also heard a proposal for an Historic District on Main Road on the eastern part of the town. Spearheaded by Richard Wines, chair of the Landmarks Preservation Committee, the effort is seeking state and national approval for the Main Road corridor, even stretching into Southold Town.
