A mini-school bus headed for St. Isidore Elementary School in Riverhead crashed onto the guardrail of the Long Island Expressway Tuesday afternoon after the driver lost control of the bus between eastbound exits 72 and 73, police at the scene said.

No children were on board at the time and the bus driver was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.

The accident happened just before 2 p.m. and the westbound ramp of Exit 72 was closed as officials began to remove the bus, police said. The eastbound exit is open after briefly being closed.

State Department of Transportation officials were en route to inspect any damage to the base of an expressway sign.

The Riverhead Fire Department responded to the scene and Riverhead Ambulance volunteers transported the driver to PBMC.
