Photos: Riverhead football wins a thriller in season opener
The game might not have played out the way the coaches drew it up, but Riverhead’s Week One win over West Islip sure was a thriller.
Steven Reid III pulled in an 18-yard touchdown reception with 15.1 seconds left to play, allowing the Blue Waves to escape with a 28-25 victory at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field in Riverhead.
The first three Riverhead touchdowns came on runs by Ryun Moore. Despite having a problem with his left calf throughout the game, the junior galloped for 139 yards on 33 carries. He also threw a 2-point conversion pass to Blake Carrera, giving the Blue Waves a 14-3 lead by halftime.
