Traffic was shut down along Sound Avenue  in Baiting Hollow Monday morning after a man driving an RV swerved off the road to avoid hitting a deer, Riverhead Town Police said.

The driver was heading westbound, coming up Baiting Hollow hill at around 6:15 a.m. when he saw the deer jump out of the woods, police said.

He missed the animal, but ended up in a ditch on the north side of the road. He was unharmed, but his 31-foot camper had to be towed out of the woods, police said.

Sound Avenue opened back up around 9 a.m.
