The McGann-Mercy Monarchs are coming off a resurgent season last year that featured a playoff win over Port Jefferson. The Monarchs return a good portion of last year’s team, but it will still be new look this year. The team lost a few key players like Fiona Nunez to graduation and the Monarchs also have a new coach in Matt Brisson. He takes over the program after a successful career at Sachem East, where he led the Flaming Arrows to a state championship in 2010. He was Suffolk County’s Coach of the Year last season.

The Monarchs opened the season Tuesday night with a non-league loss at Patchogue-Medford, 64-36.

The Monarchs return Mia Behrens, Mary Reiter and Savannah Hauser as key players.

Mercy opens the league season Dec. 12 at Pierson.
