Riverhead Town will hold its annual shotgun hunting lottery Thursday, Dec. 18, at Town Hall for local residents looking to hunt on town lands in Calverton and in Baiting Hollow.

The hunters, drawn from those who live in town or own property here, will be allowed to hunt in one of several designated zones at the Enterprise Park at Calverton, as well as a parcel of land south of South Avenue in Baiting Hollow, organizers said.

Councilman George Gabrielsen said the hunting lottery has been a success in recent years, with more than 100 hunters taking part last year.

“They’re very organized,” he said. “If we could do this throughout the town, we’d have no deer problem whatsoever.”

The hunting lottery will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Residents must provide proper identification and their hunting licenses at the lottery, according to the town. Residents must also be in attendance to be entered into the lottery.
