Cops: Riverhead man drives around barricade, ends up stranded
A Riverhead motorist who drove around a road closure sign following Tuesday’s nor’easter had to be rescued after his vehicle started floating into bay waters, Southampton Town Police said.
Michael Andriole, 63, was driving a Mercedes Benz SUV westbound on Dune Road in the Town of Southampton when he went around the barricades at about 12:25 p.m., according to a report.
Police said the vehicle became disabled due to severe flooding on the road.
Mr. Andriole called police saying he was “sinking and floating into the bay,” according to the report.
Southampton Town Bay Constables and Hampton Bays Fire Department and ambulance volunteers responded to the scene, first assisting Mr. Andriole from the vehicle and later removing it from bay waters.
Mr. Andriole was not injured, and no tickets were issued, police said.
