Cops: Hispanic man attacked, robbed of cell phone in Riverhead

Riverhead Town police are searching for two suspects that reportedly attacked and robbed a 37-year-old Hispanic man Sunday night in Riverhead.

Police were called at around 9:10 p.m. to a residence on Sweezey Avenue where the victim was found told police the suspects chased him into his front yard, pushed him to the ground and repeatedly punched him in his face, officials said.

The suspects also stole the victim’s Motorola cell phone after they searched his pockets, police said.

After several of the victim’s friends came to his aide when he yelled for help, one of the suspects pulled out a knife, made threats and fled the area on bicycles, police said.

The suspects are described as two black men in their mid-to-late 20s wearing black hooded sweatshirts and black jeans, officials said. They were last seen heading south on Sweezey Avenue, police said.

The robbery is the latest in a string of attacks and muggings against Hispanic men in the downtown area reported by police.

It is not immediately clear whether this robbery is related to the other muggings.
