Flanders man arrested for DWI in Southampton checkpoint

Four people were arrested — including one man from Flanders — and 15 summonses were issued during a New Year’s Eve sobriety checkpoint in Hampton Bays, Southampton Town police said.

In all, 72 vehicles were stopped during the operation on Montauk Highway, where Southampton Town police were helped out by other members of the district attorney’s East End DWI Task Force.

Officers from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Westhampton Beach Village, Quogue Village, Easthampton Village and Easthampton Town police departments participated in the checkpoint, officials said.

The Flanders man, Jose Mendez-Amaya, 19, was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.
