Police: Man shoots himself in the foot, loses toes

A Northampton man who was cleaning what he believed was an unloaded shotgun accidentally shot himself in the foot early Saturday, sustaining a loss of some toes, Southampton Town police said.

Riverhead Town police responded to a report of a gunshot victim at Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he had gone to seek medical attention just before 6 a.m., according to a report.

The victim had “assumed” the weapon was empty and failed to hold the shotgun safely, accidentally shooting himself once in the foot, Detective Sergeant Lisa Costa of the Southampton Police Department said.

No criminality was involved, she said.
