LONG ISLAND ELITE TRACK INVITATIONAL

One of the qualities Shoreham-Wading River coach Paul Koretzki likes best about his standout long-distance runner, Katherine Lee, is her knack for rising to the occasion and coming up big in the big track and field meets.

She did it again on Sunday.

Lee wasn’t impressed with her time, but it was fast enough to bring her first place in the 3,000 meters in the Long Island Elite Track Invitational at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington. The freshman tuned up for the upcoming state meet by clocking a time of 11 minutes 4.50 seconds. Bay Shore junior Alexandra Peck was second in 11:09.77.

Another runner headed to next month’s state meet, Bishop McGann-Mercy junior Meg Tuthill, took fourth place in the 600 in 1:39.52.

Her teammate, sophomore Kait Butterfield, was sixth in the 1,000 in 3:13.38.

Shoreham junior Megan Kelly won her heat and finished 16th in the 300 in 45.81 seconds.
