Louis Gatz Jr.

Louis Gatz Jr. of Riverhead died April 14 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 71.

He was born April 14, 1944, to Doris (Sneed) and Louis Gatz Sr.

Louis was a third-generation farmer who worked on his family farm for many years. He then became a truck driver, driving for fuel oil companies and later driving for Jay W. Guild Greenhouses in Peconic.

In 1980, Louis began his career with A&P. He worked part-time at the Riverhead store, and later became full-time employee at the Mattituck location, assisting at other stores throughout Suffolk County. His wife, Linda, said he was a dedicated and hard worker, always working multiple jobs.

Louis enjoyed hunting and trap shooting and had been a member of Peconic River Sportsman’s Club and Mattituck Gun Club. He also enjoyed working on cars.

In addition to Linda (née Tyte), Louis is survived by his son, Peter, of Shirley; his son Thomas W. Dannenberg, his daughter, Eve L. Gatz Schwamborn, and his sisters, Mary Gatz and Sophie Schmidt, all of Riverhead; and his granddaughter, Lillyanna Eve Gatz.

The family received visitors April 16 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service was held April 17 at the funeral home. Interment took place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
