A 20-year-old Riverhead man driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) was arrested after leading police on a “low-speed chase” across Riverhead Tuesday night, town police said.

Around 9 p.m., patrol officers spotted Antonio T. Reeder Jr. riding the ATV on a public roadway in the area of Roanoke Avenue and Southern Parkway, police said.

The officers turned onto Southern Parkway and tried to stop Mr. Reeder, but he fled east down Southern Parkway, according to police.

A low-speed pursuit then ensued, with the ATV leading the patrol unit down Elton Street and east onto East Main Street, continuing east and across Route 25 north onto Doctors Path, police said.

Mr. Reeder ditched the ATV on Doctors Path and ran westbound on foot into a wooded area just north of PSEG, officers said.

A Riverhead Police K-9 was dispatched and assisting patrol units set a perimeter around the wooded area, where they located Mr. Reeder hiding in the woods, according to a police press release.

Mr. Reeder was initially charged with multiple traffic violations, but a routine DMV check of the ATV indicated it was stolen in September 2014.

Mr. Reeder was subsequently charged with possession of stolen property in the 4th degree. He was arrested and held awaiting morning arraignment in Riverhead Town Justice Court.
