Members of the Suffolk County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented the Riverhead Police Department a check for $350 to purchase a bulletproof vest.

Ann Otten, the vice regent of the chapter, presented the check along with Georgette Case and Marilyn Runyan to Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller.

Chief Hegermiller thanked the women for their generosity and “for their care and concern for the safety of men and women of the Riverhead Police Department.”

The members said that the officers “are not faceless strangers — they are our friends and neighbors and family. They are the men and women who put themselves in harms way to protect the citizens that they serve.”

The group expressed its condolences for the Long Island police officer killed this week while working for the New York Police Department.

Last year the Riverhead Police Department received $12,000 in funding for the purchase of 35 vests through the Attorney General’s inVEST Partnership.
