Mitchell Wilcenski

Lifelong Laurel resident Mitchell Wilcenski passed away May 10, 2015 at his home in Laurel with his family by his side, at the age of 85. Mitchell was born in Laurel to Mary and Aleksander Wilcenski May 28, 1929. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1946 and married Theresa Berkoski May 29, 1949, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. They were married for almost 66 years.

Mitchell was predeceased by his son, Ronald and his granddaughter, Donna Lynn Wilcenski. He is survived by his wife, Theresa; sons, Mark, Thomas and Michael, and daughters, Joan McCarthy, Laurie Salvadori and Therese Gillan. He also had 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mitchell began his career as a farmer and then worked as a corrections officer at Suffolk County Correctional Facility, ultimately retiring in the early 1990s as captain. In his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, clamming, crabbing, painting, working around the house and in his garage. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed doing his daily crossword puzzle.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church, to be followed by a private spreading of his ashes on Peconic Bay.
