The Riverhead boys lacrosse team will open the playoffs against perennial powerhouse Ward Melville in the first round of the Class A playoffs.

The Blue Waves, who clinched a spot in the final game of the regular season, will play at 4 p.m. Friday at Ward Melville High School. The Blue Waves were seeded No. 13 and the Patriots are No. 4.

It’s the second time in three years the Blue Waves (8-7) have reached the playoffs and they’ll be looking for the first postseason win in program history.

Riverhead did not play Ward Melville in the regular season.

In Class B, the League III champion Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats were seeded No. 1 and received a bye into the semifinals.

The Wildcats (15-1) will host either No. 4 Harborfields or No. 5 Sayville on May 21.

Shoreham enters the playoffs on a 12-game winning streak as they look for their first county title since 2013. The Wildcats have won 10 county titles since 2001.

On the girls side, Shoreham-Wading River was seeded No. 3 in Class C and will travel to face No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point in the semifinals on May 20. The game is at 4 p.m. and there is a $6 admission. The winner advances into the county finals.

The Wildcats (9-6) will be vying for their first county title since 2012.
