Police: Car thief nabbed after OnStar halts Camaro

Spencer

Police arrested a Riverhead man after they said he stole a Target employee’s car Friday night and later had the car automatically disabled after OnStar was notified in the middle of a vehicle pursuit.

According to police, an employee of the Route 58 box store had her 2014 Chevy Camaro “forcibly stolen” from her around 7:15 p.m. Riverhead resident Khashif Spencer, 29, reportedly struggled to get the car keys from the victim as she was getting into the car.

Police said Mr. Spencer then led police on a car chase that ended when the car owner and police notified OnStar about the incident. The Camaro was automatically disabled, which allowed police to take Mr. Spencer into custody without further incident.

He was arrested and charged with one count of robbery in the second degree, as well as numerous vehicle and traffic violations.

He is being held pending arraignment.
