Cops: Drunk driver tried to escape crash scene on foot

A 20-year-old Riverhead man was arrested for attempting to flee the scene of a DWI crash on foot early Sunday, town police said.

Edwar Gomes struck a tree and mailbox on Middle Road before police stopped him and he attempted to run away, police said. He was located at a residence on Horton Avenue and taken into police custody.

Mr. Gomez was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest, police said.
