Cops: Riverhead man charged with using a pipe during robbery
A Riverhead man was arrested Thursday and charged with using a metal pipe during a robbery in Flanders, according to Southampton Town police.
Anthony Jenkins, 50, approached two men walking along Old Quogue Road at around 3:45 p.m., asked them for money and hit them with a pipe, police said.
After the victims fought back, Mr. Jenkins ran into a nearby wooded area and was apprehended a short time later, officials said. Suffolk County Police Aviation and Suffolk County Sheriff K-9 also assisted in the search efforts, police said.
The victims were treated for minor injuries, officials said.
Mr. Jenkins was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
Last year, Mr. Jenkins was caught stealing cigarettes and a Beatles CD from a car in Riverhead, according to Riverhead Town police. He had previously been arrested in November 2013 after he turned himself in and admitted he stole speakers from a car and then sold them, according to Southampton Town police.
