Track & Field: SWR freshman wins 1-mile race at Nationals

Coming of an all-state finish at the New York State Track & Field Championships last weekend, Shoreham-Wading River freshman Katherine Lee added another major accomplishment to her resume.

Lee won the 1-mile freshman race Saturday afternoon at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. Lee, who mostly ran the 3,000 and 1,500-meter races during the season, won the race in 4 minutes 57.65 seconds. She was the only runner in the 27-girl field to crack 5 minutes.

Carly Benson of West Genesee took second in 5:00.95.

Lee finished a few seconds shy of the meet record of 4:54.08, set in 2005.

Lee will also run as part of the distance medley emerging elite race Sunday.

Another Shoreham-Wading River runner, junior Kaitlyn Ohrtman, ran the 1-mile emerging elite race Friday and finished 32nd in 5:18.30. McGann-Mercy junior Meg Tuthill ran the same race and finished 22nd in 5:08.56.

Lee’s time in the emerging elite race would have put her second overall.
