Southampton blotter: DWI arrests and a fight over money

A Flanders man was arrested Saturday on drunken-driving charges in Flanders, officials said.

Baltazar Hernandez, 35, was stopped for a headlight traffic inspection on Riverside Avenue around 3:50 a.m. and was found to be intoxicated, police said.

Mr. Hernandez was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle on a highway and having substandard lights, both violations, police said.

• A Riverhead man was arrested Saturday on drunken-driving charges in Hampton Bays, police said.

Lawrence James, 29, was stopped for an equipment violation on Donellan Road around 4:50 a.m. when police detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. He also had slurred speech, bloodshot and glassy eyes and was unsteady on his feet. Mr. James performed poorly on his standardized field sobriety test and failed a pre-screening breath test with a .15 percent blood alcohol content, police said.

Mr. James was charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, and failure to dim lights, a violation, police said.

• A Riverhead man was arrested last Wednesday on traffic charges in Shinnecock Hills, police said.

Cesar Abzun, 31, was stopped for a traffic infraction on Inlet Road around 3 a.m. He was found to have an active suspension for failure to pay a fine, police said.

Mr. Abzun was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and a speed violation, officials said.

• A Riverhead man was arrested last Tuesday on traffic charges in Riverside.

Rickle Dixon, 42, was stopped for a traffic infraction on Center Drive around 5:20 p.m. He was found to have a suspended driver’s license, police said.

He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, driving without a license and for operating without a safety belt and shoulder harness, both violations, police said.

• A Riverhead man reported that he was harassed last Monday in Flanders after a money dispute, police said.

The report states that the complainant and another man were meeting in a car on Albany Avenue discussing money. A dispute arose and the complainant left the car. The other man then left the car and punched the complainant in the chest, police said.

No arrest has been made, as police are waiting for a definite identification of the man, officials said.

• A Southampton woman had sunglasses stolen from her car at the 7-Eleven in Flanders last Wednesday evening, police said.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
