A woman was hospitalized after her van smashed into the back of another car on Sound Avenue and flipped over Tuesday morning, Riverhead police officials said.

The drivers of the sedan was not injured, police added.

The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. between Herricks Lane and Aldrich Lane in Jamesport, authorities on scene said. Riverhead police officer Dennis Cavanagh said the driver of the van was headed east on Sound Avenue when she approached two vehicles stopped in the roadway trying to make a left turn.

Mr. Cavanagh said the victim didn’t slow down and collided with the sedan, went off the roadway and hit a tree.

The woman driving the SUV became trapped after the crash and was freed by Jamesport firefighters, police said.

The woman suffered an injury to her ankle and was taken by Riverhead ambulance volunteers to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment. No criminal charges were expected to be filed, Mr. Cavanagh said.

Sound Avenue was closed in both directions as police investigated the accident and cleaned up the crash scene.
