On 9/11 anniversary, gathering to remember and reflect

Dozens of people gathered at the intersection of Park Road and Marine Street in Riverhead Friday night to participate in a candlelight walk and vigil in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people who died 14 years ago on Sept. 11.

The corner is known as Thomas Kelly Memorial Drive in honor of Lt. Thomas Kelly. On 9/11, Mr. Kelly was a member of the Fire Department of New York along with Jonathan Ielpi, who both died during the attack.

“It’s fitting that we have it here at the Thomas Kelly Memorial Park, a place developed by family, the community, township of Riverhead, to honor not only Thomas Kelly for whom it’s named, but as an ongoing reminder for the people who sacrificed so much and the family and people left behind to remember and preserve,” said Sound Park Heights president Tom O’Haire.

Firemen, boy scouts and community members gathered at the memorial at the corner of Park Road and Sound Avenue for a moment of silence, words of comfort and prayer.
