Riverhead Raceway: Maliszewski beats Blunderbust field, and the rain

Former Blunderbust champion Scott Maliszewski of Deer Park burned the midnight oil to get his potent racer back in shape for action at Riverhead Raceway on Saturday evening. The effort paid off as he was declared the winner of the race when rain halted the scheduled 20-lap main event after 16 laps. Jimmy White Jr. of Southampton triumphed in a 40-lap Grand Enduro.

In the Blunderbust race, rain started to fall during a caution flag period and the race was deemed official, leaving Maliszewski with his 17th career win. Bill Wegmann Sr., 70, of North Bellmore was the runner-up. Jack Handley Jr. of Medford came in third.

In the Grand Enduro, Dave Antos of Lindenhurst was seeking his second win in six days, but on Lap 26 in lapped traffic White ended those hopes when he took the lead with an inside pass off a turn. Once out front, White kept the lead until the checker flag waved. Antos was second, followed by the third-place Greg Zaleski of Jamesport.

Once the rain moved in on Lap 16 of the Blunderbust feature, it halted the remainder of the program. This Saturday night will see the final NASCAR Whelen All American Series program under owners Barbara and Jim Cromarty, presented with some 225 laps in feature event racing set for Champion’s Night. A special twilight start time of 4:30 p.m. for feature event racing will get a busy evening and night underway.
