Cops: Man asks for $2, steals wad of cash instead
A Riverhead man was arrested Monday night after police said he stole $25 from a man who was about to give him $2 as charity.
According to police, 28-year-old Rodney Brooks asked someone on Railroad Avenue for $2. When the victim pulled out his money, Mr. Brooks reportedly grabbed all the cash in his hand, which totaled $25.
The two then got into an argument, police said. Eventually, Mr. Brooks allegedly ran away.
The victim called police, who called in a K-9 unit who tracked from the scene to Hallett Avenue, where Mr. Brooks was found.
Mr. Brooks — who was arrested two-and-a-half years ago after he was stabbed not far from Railroad Avenue — was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, a felony.
He is being held for a morning arraignment, police said.
