A car knocked a fire hydrant off its base and crashed into a utility pole in Jamesport on Wednesday, according to a Jamesport Fire Department press release.

The accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Peconic Bay Boulevard and Tuts Lane, officials said.

After the car hit the fire hydrant and “cut a telephone pole in half,” the vehicle came to a stop in the center of the road, the release states.

The unidentified driver was traveling alone, officials said. Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated the victim for unknown injuries.

“Power appeared to be out in the immediate area” and the road was closed for about 40 minutes during the rescue efforts, officials said.
