Fall on the North Fork has officially arrived, and there is just as much to see and do as the leaves change and temperatures drop. The harvest season is one of the busiest times of the year — grapes are being picked for new vintages, autumn-inspired dishes are appearing on menus, and of course, pumpkins are available for the picking. With all of the many activities out here, Glenwood Village has the top 4 things to do this fall on the North Fork.
Barrel Tastings & Tours
With the grape harvest comes a lot more to do and see at the wineries in our region outside of standard wine tasting. Many local vineyards offer private tours of their facility, along with special tastings of vintages straight from the barrels. Paumanok Vineyards in Aquebogue, for example, invites guests to its Futures Barrel Tasting, giving them the opportunity to purchase their favorites before they are bottled. The winemaker of Bedell Cellars in Cutchogue is hosting a special winemaking discussion, which includes tastings and local cheeses.
Harvest Season Wine-Inspired Dinners
What is great local wine without some delicious local food? Ingredients reminiscent of fall highlight many menus in these cooler months. Restaurants like noah’s will host Harvest Wine Dinners featuring multi-course meals paired with the wines of a local East End vineyard. Roanoke Vineyards of Riverhead and Mattituck holds a post-summer “moveable feast” featuring its award-winning wines. You can make you way down Love Lane to enjoy great dishes and bites from the resident restaurants and food purveyors.
Fun Ways To Give Back
The local community is a fan of giving back, and having a good time while doing so. Jamesport Meeting House hosts concerts throughout the year to benefit various charities. On Oct. 4, they will host a Piano Four-Hands Concert with nationally-recognized pianists. Hops for Habitat Art and Awareness is taking place at Greenport Brewery on Nov. 6, and will feature marine-inspired artwork and of course, the brewery’s great beers. Proceeds from sales will support local artists and marine habitat restoration.
Pumpkin Everything
As we all know, fall is not complete without pumpkins! Whether you indulge in farm-fresh pumpkin-spiced baked goods or go to pick your own, North Fork farms are busy with a number of activities to be enjoyed with the family. Go for a hayride with the little ones at Stakey’s Pumpkin Farm before or after you picnic at the Snack Shack. Harbes Family Farm hosts the Pumpkin Fall Festival every weekend with live music, activities for kids, fresh roasted corn and more. These pumpkin-inspired fall activities are a fun and affordable way for people of all ages to enjoy the North Fork.
Celebrate the local community and experience autumn in the best ways possible on the North Fork over the next several weeks with these great local activities. Whether you’re a budding wine enthusiast or just plain love pumpkins, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Happy Harvest!
