Lois Brandstetter of Southold passed peacefully in the early morning hours of Oct. 26, 2015, with her children at her side. She was 80.

Born in the Bronx, she spent part of her early childhood in Lake Carmel, N.Y. and graduated from James Monroe High School. As a young woman, Lois worked as a secretary in Manhattan while still living in the Bronx. She met her future husband at church while singing in the choir. Falling in love, Lois married Robert Brandstetter in 1956. The young couple eventually moved to Levittown where they raised three children.

As a mom, Lois was a Brownie and a Girl Scout leader. She took on the role as class mother several times, chaperoned school trips, attended PTA meetings, went to concerts and attended every “meet the teacher” night there was. Drawing on her secretarial skills, she was known to stay up late to type a last-minute report for a procrastinating child. She ran the household, prepared meals, organized holidays and took care of elderly family members.

Lois began taking classes at SUNY Farmingdale in the mid-1970s with an interest in health care. She eventually received a professional certificate as an EEG technologist and took a position with the Nassau County Medical Center department of neurology. In 1984 she received that department’s distinguished service award.

After 20 years of service to Nassau County, Lois retired with her husband to the new home they had built in Southold.

Lois was an active member of St Peter Lutheran Church in Greenport. She sang in the choir and participated in numerous church committees and groups.

Her husband Bob passed away in October 2014 after 58 years of marriage.

Lois is survived by her daughter, Lisa Kunze and her husband, Charles; her son John and his wife, Pamela; her son Matthew and his wife, Laura and her grandchildren Bryan, Christine, Alexa, Kayleigh and Ashlynn. Her dedication to and love of family will be dearly missed.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A service will be held Friday, Oct. 30, at St Peter Lutheran Church in Greenport, followed by interment with Bob at Calverton National Cemetery.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers you make a donation to either St Peter Lutheran Church or Southold Fire Department. Both the church and the fire department have been very supportive of our family.

This is a paid notice.
