A 63-year-old hunter was shot in the leg at the Peconic River Sportsman Club in Calverton by a fellow member who accidentally discharged his gun while attempting to unload it Sunday morning, Riverhead Town police said.

Both the victim and the 82-year-old shooter were situated in hunting blinds when the incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. New York State DEC police investigators deemed the shooting accidental and no charges are anticipated.

The victim suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his lower right leg, police said. He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Police did not identify either man in a press release issued late Sunday afternoon, saying only that they are longtime members of the River Road club.
