Police searching for suspects after downtown mugging

Police are searching for a group of people after a man was assaulted near the railroad station downtown late last night.

According to Riverhead police, a victim of the assault was found bleeding from the face and head after police arrived to the scene at 303 Osborn Avenue around 11:30 p.m. His injuries were considered non life-threatening in nature, and he was treated at Peconic Bay Medical Center.

An investigation revealed that the man who had been assaulted was robbed of his cell phone by four individuals — two black men and two black females — who fled the area after “repeatedly striking the victim about the face and head with an unknown object.”

A search of the area was conducted by police and K-9 units, though none of the suspects were located.

A string of assaults had occurred on or near the railroad tracks last year — often times including Hispanic victims — though no major incidents have been reported as of late. Thursday night’s victim was a Hispanic man.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the crime or would have information about the crime is asked to call police at 727-4500, ext. 332.
