An Aquebogue man was killed early Wednesday after an alleged drunk driver headed the wrong way on Sunrise Highway collided with his car head-on, Suffolk County police said.

According to a news release, 57-year-old Thomas D’Eletto was driving west on Sunrise Highway in Shirley when his 2010 Toyota Corolla was hit by a 2007 Audi A4 driving in the wrong direction about 5:35 a.m.

Mr. D’Eletto was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The driver of the other car, 54-year-old Port Jefferson Station resident Christopher O’Brien was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of non life-threatening injuries and will be arraigned in court at a later date, police said.
