Cosmetology students raise money for Brendan House, local charities
Cosmetology students practiced salon services and, instead of paying for those haircuts and manicures, customers donated to charity.
That was the idea behind a community service event held last month at Eastern Suffolk BOCES and Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology campuses in Riverhead and Oakdale. In total, the technical centers raised more than $1,500 and 450 pounds of food for Brendan House in Riverhead, and St. John’s Nepomucene in Oakdale and the Long Island Council of Churches, according to a press release.
“It’s a win-win situation for the students and the community,” cosmetology teacher Carolyn McKillop said in the release. “The students have the opportunity to display their talents, practice their skills and customer relations, and it is good will to the community.”
Attendees to the Dec. 9 event were asked to make a $5 donation and bring a non-perishable food item to pay for their salon services. Proceeds were split between the three recipients and Brendan House is expected to receive about $665 this week, officials said.
Food items were delivered Dec. 11.
More than 300 people donated and received salon treatments.
“The students were very nice,” said Constance Borny of Riverhead. “They showed off the skills they are learning. I enjoyed the experience, especially knowing that my donation was going to a good cause.”
