Cops: Burglar stole $5,800 from Wading River smoke shop

Riverhead police are looking for a man they say broke into a Wading River tobacco store Monday night and stole cigarettes, a cash register and cash worth nearly $6,000 in total.

Police said responded to a burglar alarm at “The Smoke Shop” on Route 25A in Wading River about 10:45 p.m., and found glass door had been broken at the storefront. According to a police news release, an investigation found an unknown man used a brick to smash his way into the building.

The burglar then took about 50 cartons of cigarettes, a register and cash, totaling $5,800, according to the police report. The suspect then ran off on foot “in an unknown direction,” police said. Officers searched the area, but did not find the burglar, police said.
