Riverhead Police are seeking witnesses after they said two cars were hit during an “exchange of gunfire” at the River Pointe Apartments around 7:30 p.m.

According to police, authorities responded to “numerous reports of gun shots being fired” at the apartment complex — which is located on East Main Street very close to police headquarters.

Callers had said the shots were coming from the westernmost portion of the complex and upon police arrival, it was found that two vehicles in front of the F building had been damaged by what appeared to be an “exchange of gunfire.”

Several shell casings and bullet fragments were found in the area, according to police, and in addition to the vehicles that were hit, the front of the F and G buildings were also damaged, police said.

No injuries were reported and the subjects involved remain at large.

Anyone with information is asked to call Riverhead Police at 727-4500.
