Elderly driver in ‘critical condition’ following Route 58 crash

Update (Thursday 4:30 p.m.): The elderly couple injured in a serious car accident on Route 58 in Riverhead Wednesday remain at Stony Brook University Hospital, with the 82-year-old driver in “critical condition,” according to a hospital spokesperson.

Rose and Sal Allocco, both 82, of Calverton were heading west on Route 58 near the Apple Honda dealership about 5 p.m when Ms. Allocco’s vehicle left the road and struck a guard rail and flipped over, Riverhead police confirmed.

Mr. and Ms. Allocco were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where Mr. Allocco remains in “good” condition, according to the hospital spokesperson.

Update (Wednesday 11:10 p.m.): Riverhead police said the driver of the 2008 Ford Focus that overturned on Route 58 shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday was driven by an 82-year-old woman.

An 82-year-old man was the passenger in the car. They were both transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Police did not disclose their identities or an update on their condition.

Police said the vehicle left a portion of the roadway, struck a guard rail and overturned. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Route 58 was closed for an accident investigation and reopened at 6:48 p.m., police said.

Original Story: Riverhead Police are investigating a single-car crash that occurred on Route 58 around 5 p.m. that sent two people to the hospital — one to Stony Brook University Hospital.

According to Sgt. Tim Palmer, a silver sedan was heading westbound on Route 58 when it rolled over. Both victims had “serious injuries,” the sergeant said. The other victim was sent to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Riverhead Fire Department and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene.

Route 58 remains closed between Best Buy and Osborn Avenue while police investigate the accident.
