Louis J. Sabo, 86, passed away April 3, 2016, at Westhampton Care Center. 

He was born June 4, 1929, in New Brunswick, N.J., to Louis Sabo and Helen (Gauer) Sabo.

Louis served in the U.S. Army Tank Company 279 during the Korean War, where he achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded a bronze service star.

Louis was self-employed as a builder and completed many projects in Riverhead and neighboring areas. He was an expert in woodworking and in the art of crafting whirligigs. He had his pilot’s license and took many friends and family up for flights. Louis also loved playing Solitaire on his computer.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan (née Urban); his beloved daughter, Susan; his sons, John and Robert; his dear sister, Dorothy Bekiesz; and was the devoted grandfather of two and great-grandfather of two. He is also survived by his faithful little companion, his Yorkie, Bella.

A service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Calverton National Cemetery. Those friends and family attending are kindly requested to meet at the office in Calverton National Cemetery at 11 a.m.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, woundedwarriorproject.org.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.
