Roxanna Mae Parker

Former South Jamesport resident, Roxanna “Roxie” Mae (Sypher) Parker of Calverton, passed away April 7, 2016, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead at the age of 92. 

Roxie was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Greenport, to Helen Young (Harris) and Edgar L. Sypher. She had a long career at the New York Telephone Company where she worked her way up to supervisor. She was well respected and especially enjoyed her role as shop steward. Her brother, Ron, recalled how she walked two miles to work each day to keep her family together during the “Grapes of Wrath” time period. All the while, supporting her family and keeping her younger brothers “in line.”

In 1958, Roxie married Edward Parker at St. John’s Church in Riverhead. Her life flourished as she was recognized for her outstanding leadership skills as president of the Pioneers of America. Roxie was inducted into the Pi Alpha Sigma Honor Society for her stellar college performance. Additionally, she earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award. She began her second career at BOCES working at the special programs office for over 20 years. Roxie was acknowledged for her hard work and dedication.

Roxie was a bright woman with a quick wit. She loved spending time with her family, gardening, traveling, collecting art and wine tasting. She was an active member of the Moose Lodge. Roxie was a true champion of the underdog and will be remembered for her fun loving spirit and boundless energy.

Roxanna is survived by her daughter, Andrea (Tim) Sabin of New Mexico; her brother, Ronald Sypher of Connecticut; her brother Orville Sypher of South Jamesport; four grandchildren, Ann Marie, Brian, Michael and Samantha Parker; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her spouse of 36 years, Edward Parker; son, Brian; sister Helen Rae Walsh; and brothers Edgar, Thomas, Hubert, Jarvis, DeWitte and William.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, April 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a prayer service will take place at 7:30 p.m.. A brief ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 15, at the funeral home, followed by the interment at Riverhead Cemetery.

A celebration of life party will be held at a future date.
