Riverhead News: Kiwanis Club’s Star Breakfast at Birchwood

Birchwood

Riverhead Free Library celebrated its 120th anniversary on April 2, with special proclamations presented by Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo, state Sen. Ken LaValle, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Congressman Lee Zeldin.

The recipients were RFL interim director Kathleen Richter and board president Kathy Berezny (me!). Warren McKnight played the banjo and Riverhead High School Key Club member Sarah Brennan played the guitar. The theme at the circulation desk was “The Cat in the Hat.” Clerks Arianne DePhillips, Rasheima Alvardo, Nykel Reese and Cassie Rankel were dressed according to the theme in costumes made by Margie Santiago. The Long Island Room, which many residents didn’t know existed, displayed first-edition books and books about Riverhead community history. Guests were amazed by the quality of the display. A memory board was also created and will remain on display all year. If you have any memories of the library you’d like to share, send an email to [email protected].

After the presentations and ceremony all were invited to enjoy refreshments served by Friends of the Library’s Linda Bartunek and Joyce Rienzo, with help from Jane Hill and Rosalie Del Quaglio. It was a wonderful event for all who attended. I am looking forward to the next celebration; hopefully it’ll be held in the summertime when it’s warmer and sunnier.

The library’s Yellow Barn reopens Monday, April 18. Be sure to stop by and support the Friends of the Library. While browsing the many books offered, why not pick some up to enjoy this springtime.
