Calverton News: A new winner at Riverhead Raceway

Fourth of July weekend is upon us! It’s simply amazing how time flies. Some really good news is local corn should be ready. Sadly, the strawberries are almost done, but there’s lots of good stuff to replace them.

Congratulations to Kyle Soper, who won his first-ever Modified race a couple weeks ago at Riverhead Raceway. Everyone was thrilled, especially my son Robbie, who spots for Kyle in the race. Congratulations, kiddo! We hope to see a lot more wins!

Baiting Hollow Congregational Church’s annual chicken barbecue will be here before you know it — Saturday, Aug. 6. To purchase tickets in advance, call Sandi at 516-446-9101 or visit the church’s thrift store on Thursdays and Saturdays. I’ll have more information in the weeks to come.

Congratulations to all the graduates at all levels! We wish you all the best! And congrats to my granddaughter, Julia, who graduated from St. David’s Preschool. I wish you a world full of knowledge and success, my little buddy. A big thank-you to teachers Ms. Jane and Mr. John, who are simply awesome.

Happy 60th birthday to Calverton resident Jerry Ladigan, who will celebrate Saturday, July 2. Best wishes for a great day, Jerry. Birthday wishes also go out to Bryan Kappenberg on July 4. Your family and friends hope your day is special.

And happy birthday to my uncle Larry Taylor on July 6 from your wife, your family and friends, and little Brookie. We will make sure you have a wonderful day.

I don’t know if any of you have solar lights. I have enough to land a plane in my yard! Anyway, here’s some info for you: change the batteries in them. After the batteries die the lights will no longer work, so instead of throwing the lights out just insert fresh batteries in them.

I wish you all a wonderful Fourth of July. Be safe, have fun, and if you have dogs, please be very careful with them. Fireworks scare some of them terribly.
