A Riverhead woman escaped without injury after her car caught fire and was ultimately destroyed on Route 51 in Northampton Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials.

The woman, Lillian Montague of Riverhead, told the News-Review she was driving home when the driver of another car alerted her that it appeared her car was on fire about 4:30 p.m. She pulled over in the southbound lane and safely got out before flames began to consume her Honda Civic, she said.

Flanders Fire Department Chief J.J. Lennon confirmed no injuries were reported. The Riverhead Fire Department also responded and the fire was put out in about six minutes, he said.

Ms. Montague said the person who alerted her about the fire was the first to call police.

The road was reopened shortly after the fire.
