Flanders news: Moose Lodge and Kiwanis team up for event
Hello! I hope everyone has been keeping cool and checking on any elderly or sick neighbors to make sure they are safe. We asked for summer and we now have it. Enjoy it while you can. Fall will be creeping up on us soon enough.
There are a few people I missed when thanking everyone for their help with the Flanders Fire Department/FRNCA blood drive. The committee would like to thank Neil Young for the radio announcement, WLNG for passing on the information, Meeting House Deli for the donation of a hero, and all who donated their time. Most of all, a sincere thank-you to all who came out to donate, especially those who stayed and waited patiently for an extended amount of time. Long Island Blood Center has extended a sincere apology for the long wait and hopes it does not deter people from donating in the future. Thank you for helping to save lives.
Mainstream Integrative Wellness will host a Recovery Rock Concert on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. at Vail-Leavitt Music Hall in Riverhead. All proceeds will go toward helping addicts and alcoholics find housing, treatment and recovery. For ticket information, call 631-591-3573. MIW is a Long Island-based nonprofit organization.
The Riverhead Moose Lodge is having a joint event — a free day of fun for children 13 and under — with the Kiwanis Club Sunday, Aug. 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. It’s an old-fashioned day of games, prizes and crafts. Food will be available to purchase. It’s open to the public, so bring your neighbors, children and grandchildren down to the Moose Lodge. There will be a FRNCA meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at the David W. Crohan Center. Members will be collecting school supplies for local children in need. Stop by to meet and help your neighbors and bring along a pack of paper, pencils or any other school item you’d like to donate.
The Southampton Town Board will be having a work session at the Flanders firehouse on Thursday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
The Annual Rubber Duckie Race will be held at the Flanders Men’s Club on Saturday, Aug. 13 (rain date: Aug. 14). You can reserve your duck for a donation of $5 per entry by calling Fran at 631-727-5342. First prize is $100 cash. Sounds like it will be a great day to come out for a great cause and to see and meet your neighbors.
Riverside Rediscovered will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Sarikopa. Come down and see the exciting plans for our area. The first people to RSVP and show up will receive a $3 gift card to Sarikopa. Call Angela or Siris at 631-591-3926.
There will be another moonlight paddle on Saturday, Aug. 20, starting at 6:30 p.m. on the beach at the end of Long Neck Boulevard. Ron Fisher, who’s coordinating it, recommends that people bring a snack and something to drink. All canoes and kayaks are welcome. Sounds like a lot of fun!
In closing, on a personal note, I am asking everyone to watch the road and your surroundings while driving through our community. There are many people out walking or on bikes, crossing the streets, kids playing and animals crossing the street. I pulled over to help a turtle trying to cross the road last week. While I was trying to get drivers to slow down, two cars hit it. I stood there in tears because not one person even slowed down.
