Cops: After accident, Flanders man faces drug charge

Southampton Town police arrested a Flanders man who allegedly got into an altercation following a Sunday car accident in Flanders.

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. when Carl Nieves, 21, reportedly struck a LIPA telephone pole on Oak Avenue. Mr. Nieves then got into a fight with a man who tried to prevent him from leaving the scene, police said.

When interviewed by police, Mr. Nieves said he knew he drove off the road but didn’t think he hit anything, officials said. During the conversation, police learned he was in possession of a quantity of marijuana and had one Xanax pill in his car, officials said.

Mr. Nieves was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, both misdemeanors, and two violations.
