C. John Simon

C. John Simon, age 82, passed away at his home in Riverhead on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Griffing Smith Simon of Riverhead; beloved children, Peter J. Simon of Danbury, Conn., Nan Simon of Monmouth Beach, N.J., Ellen Simon of West Bath, Maine and stepdaughter, Lynne Wheeler of Morton, N.Y.. He was the cherished grandfather of Christopher Catanese, Corey Catanese, Rebecca Simon and stepgrandson, David Wheeler; dear brother to Robert K. Simon of Reidsville, N.C., Virginia Simon Koonts of Charleston, S.C. and Elizabeth Simon Mead of Peconic.

John was a graduate of Southold High School and attended Villanova University. He served as a member of Southold Fire Department and on the Southold school board. He founded and built John Simon Produce – a successful produce company with offices in three states.

He was an avid skier, golfer and world traveler. Despite suffering from Parkinson’s disease for many years, he maintained a positive attitude and continued to live a full and active life until in recent months, as the disease proved too much for his body and will to withstand. By the family he has left behind, he is remembered as being caring, kind and always supportive. Even in his last days his concern was how he could help his loved ones. We’ll miss him greatly.

The family received visitors Sept. 5 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian burial was held Sept. 6 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

In memory of John, the family kindly suggests contributions to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305.
