Shoreham-Wading River wrestling, past and present, was front and center on the big blue mat in the high school gymnasium Friday night.

Prior to their non-league dual meet against Newfield, Wildcats’ stars of the past were recognized in pre-match ceremonies. Some 19 former Shoreham wrestlers, including nine members of the coveted century club (100 or more high school wins) were given their due, as were three ex-coaches who were introduced midway through the event.

Then the present-day grapplers went out and demonstrated why the school’s success in the sport has not only held up and but has grown over the years by posting a 43-32 victory.

The Wildcats improved to 3-1 overall against League III foe Newfield (0-3).

Five Shoreham wrestlers recorded pins.

That includes John Carl Petrelli, who pinned Daniel Jean in one minute, 40 seconds at 152 pounds; Joe Miller, who won at 2:45 against Anthony Motto at 170; Ryan Condon at 2:15 vs. Mohab Ali at 182; Logan Snyder in 2:30 over Paul Toscano in 195 and Dylan Meloni pinning Anthony Bernstein in 5:57 at 113.

In fact, with two brothers who are members of the century club, Chris and Kevin, watching and rooting him on and shouting some instructions, Meloni gave the Wildcats an insurmountable 43-20 lead to clinch the meet with two matches remaining.

Shoreham’s Chris Anderson (99), Ed Troyano (106), Wesley Pase (132) and Cooper Cummings (138) also recorded wins.

After three scrimmages, the Wildcats are next in action at home at a Northport tournament on Dec. 30 at 9 a.m.
