June E. Pappas

June E. Pappas of Southold died Dec. 18, 2016, at her home at the age of 83.

She was born in Rockville Centre on Jan. 9, 1933, to Joseph and Catherine (Palmer) Sythoff.

June was trained as a licensed practical nurse and worked at the former Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead, now Peconic Bay Medical Center.

She was an avid gardener, artist and grew lavender to create beautiful gifts. Boating and traveling became a way of life she and her husband shared.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and HAL (Herb Association of Long Island)

Above all, she was as a loving wife and mother.

Formerly of Glen Cove and Huntington, she has been a resident of Southold since 1975.

Surviving are her husband Ernest Harry Pappas; children, Karen, Linda, Susan, Eddie, Sandy, Steven, Tassos and Maria; sister Carole Russo; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Dec. 21 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A Funeral Mass was held Dec. 22 at Saints Anargyroi, Taxiarchis and Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport, officiated by Father Gerasimos Ballas. Interment followed at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.
