Lorraine Marie DeNicolo

Lorraine Marie DeNicolo of Calverton, formerly of Flanders, died Jan. 19 at the age of 83.

The daughter of Elizabeth and Frederick Orlosky, she was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Jersey City, N.J.

Her family moved to Riverhead, where at the young age of 12 she met Michael, the boy who would later become her husband and love of her life.

Lorraine worked for several years as a telephone operator until marrying Michael and settling in Flanders, where they raised two daughters. During these years, Lorraine was not only an amazing homemaker and cook, but was employed as a reading aide and later secretary at Phillips Avenue School. She then went on to own a gift shop in Riverhead called Things Beautiful.

Many may remember her contagious laugh and outgoing personality. She also spent several years running the youth center and folk choir at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

In retirement, Lorraine split her time between her home in Miami, Fla., and Masonville, N.Y., until returning to Riverhead, where she continued her true passion for caring for animals. She took great pleasure in donating to rescue organizations and in feeding the wildlife. From the tiniest chipmunk to the biggest black bear, she took care of them all.

Lorraine is survived by her husband, Michael DeNicolo, and her daughters, Michele DeNicolo Whyard and Danielle DeNicolo Verzone.

A memorial Mass, followed by a celebration of Lorraine’s life, will be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.
