The East End Emerald Society is set to kickoff its St. Patrick’s Day celebrations next month at its fourth annual Grand Marshal Event.

The event, scheduled for 5 p.m. Feb. 25 at Jason’s Vineyard in Jamesport, will feature this year’s Grand Marshal: Riverhead Town Councilman James Wooten.

“I’m absolutely honored,” Mr. Wooten said about being named Grand Marshal. “I didn’t expect to get it, but I know the committee very well and they knew that I’ve been in the town most of my life. My great-great grandmother came over from Ireland and settled down in Aquebogue, so they knew I had some roots in the Irish community, especially down in that area of town.”

He said the kickoff event brings people together to celebrate not only being Irish, but also the community and spirit of St. Patrick.

The event will include pipers, a DJ, step dancers, a 50-50 raffle and buffet. Admission costs $25 at the door, with all proceeds benefiting the St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 25.

“I love the whole idea of that parade and the last four years they put it together, it really brings the whole community together,” Mr. Wooten said, adding that on that day, everybody’s Irish.
