Fire chief: Calverton barn fire under investigation

Calverton barn fire

It took about an hour for local volunteer firefighters to extinguish a blaze at a barn in Calverton Saturday morning and no injuries were reported, according to Riverhead Fire Department officials.

Riverhead police first spotted the fire around 10 a.m. on Twomey Avenue and the structure was fully engulfed with flames by the time firefighters arrived, Riverhead Fire Department Chief Kevin Brooks said.

A neighbor said she heard a “loud pop” when she noticed black smoke coming from the barn. Mr. Brooks said the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident and the barn was unoccupied.

Fire departments from Wading River and Ridge also responded to the scene, along with the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corp. Members of the Flanders Fire Department were on standby for Riverhead, Mr. Brooks said.
