SWR’s annual senior class trip to Disney reinstated

Shoreham-Wading River administrators announced at the March 21 meeting that the Board of Education has reinstated the annual senior class trip to Disney World, having been convinced by the Class of 2017 that it has educational value.

But the trip isn’t included in the tentative 2017-18 budget, according to Alan Meinster, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Trustee Jack Costas said the board must follow strict rules in funding field trips and hasn’t decided if all of the aspects of the trip are considered educational. For example, he said, while attending a Cirque de Soleil performance that’s planned may be educational, the transportation, lodging and meals aren’t.

In an effort to secure the annual senior class trip a place in future budgets, students who attended previous trips are scheduled to give a presentation about its educational value at the next board meeting Wednesday, April 5.
