Cops: Woman avoids serious injury after striking pole

A woman believed to be in her 80s escaped serious injury after striking a utility pole on Warner Avenue, causing her car to flip onto its side Monday morning in Baiting Hollow, according to Riverhead Town police.

The Riverhead Fire Department had to extract the woman through the front windshield just before 10 a.m. She was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center, but did not appear to suffer serious injuries, police said.

Police said the woman drifted out of her lane and then oversteered when she came back. The pole that was struck ended up entwined into the power lines. PSEG sent a utility truck to address the power lines.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
